The Apple iPhone 13 launch event held on September 14 saw the release of a wide array of new and exciting products. Out of these the Apple iPad Mini 2021 has particularly stood out. This updated version of the previous iPad mini promises quite a spread of new features that is bound to get the customers hooked. Let’s dive into the specifications right away.
Design and Display
As the name suggests the iPad mini is mini. With it being the smallest model in the iPad series the size has remained the same. However, the display has been enlarged. The screen is now 8.3 inches compared to the earlier 7.9 inches display which is done by getting rid of the top and bottom bezel, giving it a fantastic front view.
It’s a Liquid Retina display that offers 500 nits of peak brightness, True Tone for comfortable viewing, P3 wide color range, and ultralow reflectivity, allowing for automatic adjustment of color under different light conditions which in turn gives the person the satisfaction of vivid and sharp image viewing.
It has a Touch Id on the top right of the device which works as the power button similar to iPad Air, replacing the home button on the front. The volume buttons have been shifted to the top left.
The device has undergone another upgrade and is now equipped with a USB-C port, unlike the Lightning in the previous iPad mini, thus enabling faster charging as well as faster data transfers.
The iPad Mini comes in 4 different colors; Purple, Pink, Space Grey and a newly introduced color which Apple calls Starlight that is a hue similar to beige as seen in the promotional images.
Specs and Performance
The new Apple iPad Mini 2021 uses an A-15 Bionic chip with a 6-core CPU, a 5-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine. According to Apple, the A15 Bionic allows for 40 percent faster performance while GPU performance will jump 80 percent when compared to the previous generations. This almost brings it to the level of the new iPhone 13 although there will be a slight difference in the working between the two products.
There is an upgrade from the 3GB RAM from the previous model to 4GB RAM in the new iPad mini. The storage space comes in two options; 64GB and 256GB, although if you are big on the gaming front or have the need for downloading a large amount of files, going with the second option is better.
The iPad will connect to 5G networks as well as 4G for the cellular version of the device. However, in India it will only offer 4G/LTE connections as there is no operator currently offering 5G connections in the country. If you opt for the Wi-fi only model, it’s just as the name suggests, you will only be able to connect over Wi-Fi.
The battery life is yet to be determined however according to Apple the new iPad Mini will offer 10 hours of net surfing and video watching. This information is sort of vague and cannot be confirmed till the tablet has been tried out.
The new iPad mini will be functioning on iPadOS 15 software.
The Apple Pencil 2 also works with this new model as confirmed by Apple as it does with both iPad Air and iPad Pro. The stylus magnetically attaches to the side of the device for wireless charging however, it is not included in the retail box and has to be bought separately from the main device.
Stereo speakers are also included in, useful for listening to audio without headphones.
The device comes with a 12 MP rear camera with a flash which is absent in the more expensive iPad Air. Another thing worth noting is the 12 MP front camera which not only provides an ultra-wide 122-degree field view, but also comes with a smart feature called the Centre Stage which dynamically adjusts and sets the person in the center of the frame even when the subject is moving around which proves to be extremely beneficial during video conferences.
The Apple iPad Mini 2021, introduced at the iPhone 13 launch event held on September 14, 2021 is up for pre-order in select countries. It will be globally available from September 24, 2021 however it is hitting the shelves from October 1 in India.
With all the amazing features that is offered to the customers, the new Apple iPad Mini 2021 doesn’t come cheap. The iPad mini starts at Rs 46,900 for Wi-Fi-only models and Rs 60,900 for Wi-Fi + Cellular configurations.
The Apple Pen 2 is also separately sold and can be bought with an additional amount of Rs 10,900.
Conclusion: Why the new Apple iPad Mini matters?
Well, there are a plethora of reasons answering the question. The new Apple iPad Mini 2021 is the perfect partner for busy people. The portability of the device is possible due to its size helps to take notes on the go or casually browse through some files while sitting on a bus. No need for lugging a heavy device for doing the same.
Despite its small size, it provides numerous smart features as discussed above. Yet, despite all this there are a few things to be kept in mind. Granted it will provide a great tablet experience, it is not necessarily a laptop replacement. It lacks the smart connector to easily attach keyboard cases. Also, the display is really small. This puts a restraint on multitasking while using the iPad mini.
However, going beyond this, the iPad mini is really a nice surprise, considering Apple would have removed it from the current lineup unless there was some benefit to be gained. The result is the biggest upgrade made by Apple for the iPad mini. Needless to say, customers are bound to be enthralled with the new Apple iPad Mini 2021.
